How We Began

PureBikeTours is a passionately simple story…

… its founder, Sunil Sood is a former coal-mining (underground) fitter who spent his entire 20’s to his mid-30’s working down at his local pit. In his late 30’s (39 to be fair), he qualified as an Alpine Ski instructor, 39 being quite late in skiing years. He nevertheless, had the privilege of teaching clients (& friends alike) in Europe’s top ski resorts in France, Austria, Switzerland and Italy. He still teaches friends, when not biking.

His love of motorbiking however, began at the age of 17. But at the age of 21, he had to abandon his motorcycling to support a growing young family. It was then 27 years later, on a belated (by 41 years) trip to India in 2007; Sunil purchased a brand new Royal Enfield 500cc Classic, for £750.

The Royal Enfield was the start of two solo motorcycle journeys across the Great Western Himalaya Range, which also included Kashmir. The first ride in 2007 was six months of riding the great ranges of Kashmir and the entire region of Ladakh, then a year later in 2008. Sunil spent four months, motorcycling through the fabulous Spiti Valley, and in very close proximity to the Tibetan (China) border. Both of his solo journeys had commenced out from New Delhi.

It was in Manali, a hill-station in the foothills of the Himalayas; at the end of the second trip that fate played a hand and brought Sunil into contact with husband and wife motorcyclists from the UK. They spoke at length about their disappointing experiences with a tour company, and discovered on their arrival in India. They were part of a huge group of 25 plus other riders; had left them totally devastated.

Painstaking research revealed, not one single company in the world offered small-group motorcycle adventures. Sunil set about and formed PureBikeTours to provide likeminded Adventure Bike Riders (ABR), quality motorcycle journeys that were viable and economical for all levels of motorcyclists.
